A Very Chicken-y Valentines
There are a few holidays I don't care for, Valentines is one of them. I never really got into it when I was single and in the last 10 years of having a 'significant other' I still have not really cared for it. Quite frankly I think it is a rather silly holiday that has NOTHING to do with romantic love and no one really understands the true meaning behind it so it just gives women a reason to get mad about being single or mad at their husband/boyfriend if they don't go all out. Just plain silliness I say. I think that is my real problem with a lot of holidays, people celebrating them just because and not knowing the why behind it, not really knowing that it has a COMPLETELY different meaning then what the world thinks of it now. All that to say, I am trying to teach my kids the meaning behind these holidays so they know what they are really about. This year we had a little valentines party with some homeschooling friends that came over for the morning and we made sugar cookies, valentines, and just had fun being together. I want my kids to have that 'fun' of these parties and get together but I feel it is super important to have them know the REAL reason for these many holidays our country and world has. Not just a date on the calendar that you get off school or work, or just an excuse to party and goof off, but to really know what the meaning is behind these days. So I guess I am wanting to challenge you all. Do you know the meaning, the history behind these days? The real reason for them being on our calendar? If you don't I would challenge you to find out. I think you may be surprised with what you find.

Did you read Emily J's note on Facebook about Valentine's Day? It's really good! Made me actually like Valentine's Day for the first time in my life!
I just did and she is SPOT on!! I have been researching holidays with the kids in school and was surprised when I learned that. I think to many people just celebrate what we have made holidays into and not the real reason for them in the first place.
